Furniture Design for 4 White Walls

2010 - 2012

4 White Walls was a design collaboration between myself and another architect. I was inspired by the industrial revolution and the emergence of the modern economy. The clean lines of Bauhaus, juxtaposed with the eclectic artistic design styles of the art-deco movement, influence my work. I wanted to capture this in very sculptural and functional pieces of furniture.

Steel was a natural choice of material for my product range: it is a sustainable material with a cradle-to-cradle life cycle that allows for an integrated process of development through hand-made ironmongery and machinery work. Multifunctional Stools/shelves, Shelves, Headboards and Coffee tables made up this range. An exhibition was held at Main Street Life to launch the range.

Publishing, Art Direction & Graphic work for Various

2010 - present

Writing and publishing for me is about inspiring change and development of thought in the reader’s minds so that the article becomes the catalyst for new things.

WOMAN INC. : Women Inc. is published by Every Woman and Education and
Training Solutions (Pty) Ltd. The magazine is aimed at the working woman. It strives to become the complete resource for the working woman. Design Twist was a section in the magazine focused on the home and designing aspects influencing working woman’s lives. It is meant to be an introduction to woman who are interested in design but have little professional experience in the design industry. My role was to conceptualise, research, compile, design, write and develop the design twist feature in the magazine.

ARCHITECNOLOGY magazine is the official journal of the South African Institute of Architectural Technologists (SAIAT). The magazine is published by Brooke Patrick Publications (Pty) Ltd. The magazine is published quarterly and is exclusive to paid subscribers. Architechnology reviews trends in architecturaldesign. This magazine is targeted at any architect, architectural technologist or related professional. My role was to research, interview, write and photograph the appropriate subject matter.

FUCKUTECTURE: a poignant review on elitist South African architecture.

It is important for us as designers to critically evaluate the architecture industry to establish whether or not the current top five architectural firms are designing with the other 90% in mind. We understand this other 90% to be mutually beneficial design that caters to the local context, community development and sustainable building practices. There is an increasing global trend to commission starchitects  to design abstract inappropriate iconic buildings The paper will unpack the characteristics of what makes a starchitecture firm and the ‘4F formula’ that guarantees success in bidding for mega government and private project tenders. Using the case study of Sandton and Alexandra Township this paper will demonstrate that money and connections count for more than design and mutually beneficial architecture. Whilst starchitecture addresses fame, fortune and form, pleasing both the architect and the investor, fuckutecture addresses social responsibility, dealing with a community at hand and the establishment of a mutually beneficial architecture.

While working for SMG Architect I attained experience across a wide range of architectural projects including buildings for Commercial, Industrial, Cultural, Residential, Health Care and Community Buildings.

Since joining Arup I broadened my development in urban planning, design development, project management and team coordination. I gained unique experience in urban design and regeneration principles to further develop, uplift people and integrate transport systems in South Africa.
